Why I Built My Own Fog Light Upgrade for the 3rd Gen 4Runner

Why I Built My Own Fog Light Upgrade for the 3rd Gen 4Runner

I've owned and worked on 3rd Gen 4Runners long enough to know that Toyota got a lot right with these trucks.

They're reliable, capable, and still look great nearly 30 years later.

But one thing that has always bothered me is the front bumper lighting.

Like most owners, I started looking for better fog lights. I wanted more light output for dark back roads and trail use, but I didn't want a setup that looked like I zip-tied a couple of Amazon pod lights to the bumper.

The more I searched, the more I realized I wasn't finding what I wanted.

Everything seemed to fall into one of two categories:

  • Factory-style replacements that didn't really improve performance.
  • Universal pod light kits that looked like an afterthought.

I wanted something that looked like Toyota could have designed it.

That's what started MantellaWorks.

The Problem with Most 3rd Gen 4Runner Fog Light Upgrades

If you've looked at aftermarket fog lights for a 1996-2002 4Runner, you've probably seen the same thing I did.

Lots of brackets.

Lots of exposed hardware.

Lots of lights hanging below the bumper.

There's nothing wrong with that if your goal is maximum light output. But for me, I wanted something cleaner.

I've always liked modifications that make people ask:

"Wait... was that factory?"

That's the sweet spot.

Designing the 1996-1998 Fog Light and Turn Signal Combo

The first design focused on the 1996-1998 bumper.

I kept looking at the front end and thinking there was an opportunity to do more with that space. Instead of simply adding a fog light, I wanted to integrate both the turn signal and a modern LED pod into a single assembly.

The goal wasn't just to add light.

The goal was to make the entire front bumper look better.

After countless design revisions, prototypes, and test fits, the result became the MantellaWorks Integrated Turn Signal and Fog Light System.

A clean, purpose-built solution that adds modern lighting while maintaining the style of the original truck.

Building a Version for 1999-2002 Owners

Almost immediately, owners of 1999-2002 4Runners started asking if I planned to build a version for their bumper.

The answer was yes.

Just like the early trucks, I wanted the late-model version to look like it belonged there from day one.

The design philosophy stayed exactly the same:

  • Clean fitment
  • Modern lighting
  • No awkward brackets
  • No universal parts
  • A factory-inspired appearance

The result is a lighting upgrade specifically designed around the later 3rd Gen bumper.

Why I Chose Integrated Lighting

Most aftermarket companies focus on making things brighter.

I wanted to focus on making them better.

Better appearance.

Better fitment.

Better integration.

That's why every MantellaWorks lighting system combines functionality with design.

The turn signal isn't an afterthought.

The fog light isn't hanging underneath the bumper.

Everything is designed to work together as one complete assembly.

Made for People Who Actually Drive Their 4Runners

These parts weren't designed in a boardroom.

They were designed because I wanted them on my own truck.

Whether you're building an overland rig, restoring a clean daily driver, or just modernizing your 3rd Gen, I believe upgrades should look intentional.

That's what I strive for with every product I design.

Because at the end of the day, I'm not trying to build parts for every vehicle.

I'm building parts for people like me who still think the 3rd Gen 4Runner is one of the best trucks Toyota ever made.
